It is our mission to assure quality public health services by promoting individual and community wellness, preventing injury, illness and premature death or disability, and protecting the population from harmful effects of chemical, biological and physical hazards within the environment.
The Allegheny County Health Department is charged with protecting the environmental and public health of 1.2 million County residents through Pennsylvania Act 315 , the Local Health Administration Law.
With operations ranging from Air Quality Protection to Women, Infants and Children Nutrition Enrollment, the Department has conducted effective programming to improve residents’ well-being for more than 50 years. Significant progress has been made lowering infant mortality, preventing infectious diseases and safeguarding the environment, and in dealing with new and emerging threats to public health from AIDS, E. coli, West Nile Virus, pandemic influenza and bioterrorism.
