Coastguard New Zealand is a registered charity providing the primary marine search and rescue service in New Zealand.
Our missions are led by more than 2,400 professionally-trained volunteers, operating out of 72 strategically-positioned units around New Zealand's coast and on major lakes and waterways. Our volunteers are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
Last year Coastguard volunteers saved 76 lives, rescued 230 people and assisted another 553 people in difficulty as part of our core Search and Rescue Operations. They carried out 3,127 missions and assisted 7,088 people, giving over 300,000 hours of service to their local communities.
Coastguard New Zealand is a registered charity (Royal New Zealand Coastguard Incorporated, CC36138). We rely on public donations and sponsorship to help provide training and equipment for our volunteers, as government support provides only 15% of our operating budget.
