The Alabama Historical Commission is the historic preservation agency for the State of Alabama, charged with the mission to protect, preserve and interpret Alabama's historic places.
The agency was created by an act of the state legislature in 1966 with a mission of safeguarding Alabama’s historic buildings and sites. The Commission consists of twenty members appointed by the Governor. The members represent a broad cross section of Alabamians including architects, historians, archaeologists, and representatives of state universities.
The majority of the Alabama Historical Commission operations are based in Montgomery, Alabama, with the exception of the Historic Sites Division. These AHC owned and operated properties include the Alabama State Capitol, Belle Mont Mansion, Confederate Park & Museum, Fendall Hall, Fort Mims, Fort Morgan, Fort Toulouse & Fort Jackson, Middle Bay Lighthouse, Freedom Rides Greyhound Bus Museum, Gaineswood Plantation, Magnolia Grove, Old Cahawba, and the Joe Wheeler House at P
