La Universidad Autónoma de Chile es una institución sin fines de lucro, fundada en Temuco el 31 de julio de 1989, con el nombre de Universidad Autónoma del Sur, por el destacado abogado e Hijo Ilustre de la capital de La Araucanía, Teodoro Ribera Beneït.
El año 2003, la Universidad expandió su presencia a las regiones del Maule y Metropolitana, mientras que a fines de 2006 la Comisión Nacional de Acreditación de Pregrado (CNAP) acreditó a la Universidad Autónoma de Chile por tres años, en los ámbitos de Gestión Institucional y Docencia de Pregrado.
En 2009, la Universidad dio un nuevo paso, al crear el campus Providencia. Al año siguiente, la institución fue acreditada por cinco años, hasta octubre de 2015, agregando a las áreas obligatorias de Gestión Institucional y Docencia de Pregrado, la optativa de Vinculación con el Medio.
En 2011, la casa de estudios implementó un programa internacional que permitió incorporar y radicar en Chile a 65 investigadores, principalmente europeos, lo que generó u
