BankID er en personlig og enkel elektronisk legitimasjon for sikker identifisering og signering på nett.
BankID Norge AS er ansvarlig for drift, utvikling, kommunikasjon og salg til brukersteder. Selskapet ble stiftet 19. juni 2014 og eies av bankene i Norge.
Banknæringen startet utvikling av BankID som en felles infrastruktur i år 2000. De første kundene fikk BankID i 2004, og i dag har 3,7 millioner BankID. Over en million kunder har også BankID på mobil.
BankID er en PKI-løsning (Public Key Infrastructure) som tilfredsstiller det offentliges krav til høyeste sikkerhetsnivå, nivå 4 og Person Høyt.
Det er banker som utsteder BankID. Både personer og virksomheter som får utstedt BankID av banken er identifisert i tråd med de kravene som gjelder for identifikasjon og legitimasjonskontroll ved opprettelse av kundeforhold i bank.
