The EDB is a multilateral development bank founded by the Russian Federation and the Republic of Kazakhstan in early 2006.The EDB began operations in June 2006. During 2009-2011, Armenia, Tajikistan, Belarus and Kyrgizstan have joined the EDB
The charter capital of EDB exceeds US$1.6 Bn and is fully paid-in. The purpose of the Bank is to facilitate development and growth of market economies and to promote trade and economic integration in its member states.
At present, the EDB has offices in Almaty and Astana (Kazakhstan), St. Petersburg and Moscow (Russia), Minsk (Belarus), Dushanbe (Tajikistan), Bishkek (Kyrgizstan) and Yerevan (Armenia). As an international institution it enjoys diplomatic immunity and is exempted from local taxes in the member countries.
To date, the EDB has formed an investment portfolio of over US$3 Bn and cumulatively tapped the financial markets in the amount of over US$2 Bn (over US$1 Bn syndicated loans market, approx. US$500mm local bonds and US$500mm Eurobond issue).
