桂林市中医医院创建于1958年，坐落在山水甲天下的桂林市中心，濒临秀丽的榕湖湖畔，是桂北地区规模最大的一所集医疗、教学、科研、预防、保健、康复、院前急救为一体的三级甲等中医医院。1994年通过三级甲等中医院评审，2012年以广西地市级中医医院最高分的成绩通过了国家中医药管理局三甲医院复评。两次荣获全国卫生系统先进集体称号，2007年荣获“广西五一劳动奖状”。
医院目前包含临桂路院区、铁西院区和崇信路院区,下辖两个社区卫生服务中心，合并管理桂林市皮肤病防治医院。2003年成为广西中医药大学附属桂林医院、桂林临床教学医院、中医临床实习和护理实习基地，是黑龙江中医药大学实习就业基地,广东省中医医院协作医院,与日本熊本机能病院、澳门镜湖医院、河南洛阳正骨医院、开封市中医院及石家庄市中医院结为友好医院。
拥有国家临床重点专科建设项目一个（乳腺科），国家中医药管理局重点专科三个（乳腺科、骨伤科、内分泌科），自治区级中医重点专科、专病三个（骨伤科、妇科不孕不育专病、中风病），自治区中医肿瘤重点专科培育项目一个（肿瘤科） ，市级重点专科八个（乳腺科、骨伤科、心肺病科、内分泌科、脑病科、针灸科、推拿科、妇科）。有全国名老中医1名、桂派中医大师1名，广西名老中医2名、广西名中医6名，桂林市名中医6名。
医院总占地面积44838平方米，建筑面积34883平方米。现有在岗人员1152人，正高21人、副高96人；硕士研究生导师13名；博士、硕士共74名。设有25个临床科室、9个医技科室，开放床位615张。2014年全院门、急诊90多万人次，入院2万多人次。
