Long neglected, our schools are struggling desperately amidst the current economic turmoil. Their priority is providing the essentials --- textbooks and school supplies come first. And then the money's gone. The situation is critical, but generous private funding makes a world of difference. HEF is the vehicle that brings schools, students, and the saving funds together. Founded in 1983 by Hayward school-teacher Elaine Adams, HEF was formed to raise funds from within the community to be used by teachers who sought to improve and expand academic opportunities for Hayward's students. Such contributions make available a variety and richness of learning experiences that existing funding cannot. Twenty-five years later, nearly 800 grants totaling over $750,000 have been awarded, benefiting thousands and thousands of of our hopeful youth.
