De geschiedenis van KING begint in 1902, daar werd in de kleine bakkerij van familie de Vries in Sneek pepermunt gemaakt. Pepermunt was al eeuwen bekend en werd meestal in brokken verkocht, later werd het uitgestoken in diverse maten tabletten. De bakkersfamilie was voor die tijd erg commercieel en besloot de goedverkopende pepermunt tot het merk KING om te dopen. Kwaliteit In Niets Geëvenaard. Daarmee brachten ze als eerste een snoepje met een merknaam op de markt. Het pepermuntje werd een hit, mede door de vele extra's die men bij aankoop kreeg. De naamsbekendheid van KING is nog steeds ongeëvenaard: meer dan 99% van de mensen kent het pepermuntmerk.
