國立臺北大學的源頭是1949年11月設立的「臺灣省立地方行政專科學校」(1949年11月-1955年7月)。迄今超過一甲子歲月。嗣後歷經「臺灣省立法商學院」(1955年7月-1961年6月)、「臺灣省立中興大學法商學院」(1961年11月-1971年7月)、「國立中興大學法商學院」(1971年8月-2000年2月)等時期。國立臺北大學籌備處於1993年2月5日設立，至2000年2月1日正式成立，概括承受原中興法商、臺北夜間部所有財產、校地、校友學籍資料等。
國立臺北大學現有法律、商學、公共事務、社會科學、人文與電機資訊等6學院，法律、企業管理、會計、統計、金融與合作經營、休閒運動管理、公共行政暨政策、財政、不動產與城鄉環境、經濟、社會學、社會工作、中國文學、應用外語、歷史、電機工程、資訊工程、通訊工程等18學系、6獨立研究所、22碩士班、9博士班、8碩士在職專班以及9進修學士班(含商學院數位行銷進修學士學位學程)。另有師資培育中心與通識中心、以及全球變遷與永續科學研究中心、日本研究中心、財政暨金融研究中心、海山學研究中心、亞洲研究中心等研究中心。專兼任教師合計5百餘人、員工1百餘人、學生近1萬人。
本校與國立臺北科技大學、臺北醫學大學合組「臺北聯合大學系統」2011年2月獲教育部核定，國立臺灣海洋大學於2014年加入，4校校友總會並於同年結盟。「臺北聯合大學系統」共享教學資源、開發跨領域整合型研究，合作增設創新產業管理學分學程/醫療法律學分學程，開放跨校輔系雙主修，提升學習之廣度與視野。2012年11月另與國立臺灣藝術大學簽約策略聯盟。
