Nueces Mosque

Nueces Mosque is located in the heart of Austin, Texas and serves the diverse population of downtown Austin as well as students from The University of Texas and Austin Community College. It is often referred to as the Downtown Mosque or the University Mosque. The Mosque on Nueces St. was established in March 1977 by the Muslim Student Association at the University of Texas. It was the first mosque in Austin and was named the Islamic Center of Greater Austin (ICGA). The mosque started in a 2000 sq. ft. building without any parking spaces. It was expanded in 1982 with the purchase of an adjacent building that was remodeled into a prayer hall. It was here that Peace Elementary School, the first accredited full-time Islamic School in Austin, was established. It was here that the Muslim community in Austin grew and flourished.
