As Ontario’s largest clean electricity generator, OPG produces about half of the province’s power using its diverse portfolio of publically-owned generating assets. Our nuclear stations are the clean-power workhorses in our fleet. We rely on them to produce stable base load energy with virtually no air pollution.
To maintain these valuable assets, OPG is preparing to refurbish our Darlington Nuclear Generating Station (GS) starting in 2016. We’re also investing in the Pickering Nuclear GS to ensure it continues safely operating until 2024.
In 2014, OPG burned its last piece of coal to make electricity. It was North America’s largest climate change action to date. We refueled two of our thermal stations with biomass, which provides Ontario with renewable, dispatchable power. It also optimized the use of existing public assets. We completed converting Atikokan GS in July 2014, and the Thunder Bay GS conversion to advanced biomass followed soon after in January 2015.
