The Rainbow Program is an Indo-Dutch initiative of the Centre for Equity Studies in Delhi, the Loreto Education Society in Kolkata and the Partnership Foundation, a volunteer organsation in the Netherlands. It is the brainchild of Sister M. Cyril Mooney, an internationally-recognized educational innovator and the 2007 winner of the Padma Shri Award, the Government of India's fourth-highest civilian honor.
On a visit to her home for street girls, Mr. Ferd van Koolwijk, a visiting Dutch businessman was inspired by her model. Seeking to develop a sustainable solution for the issue of street children, he perceived the scalability of the model if replicated in a cost-effective manner. And thus, the Rainbow Program came into being in February 2002. At present after 10 years in the field, there are 30 Rainbow Homes* (RH) housing 2521 girls across Kolkata, Delhi, Hyderabad, Anantapur Bangalore, Chennai and Patna.
