SDAA, Studio di Architettura Amsterdam, is opgericht in 1988 door S. Umberto Barbieri, geleid door Eric A. Hulstein. Het bureau kent een projectafhankelijke bezetting. Het werkveld omvat de algehele architectonische praktijk, maar speciale aandacht is altijd uitgegaan naar de meer complexe ontwerpopgaven waarin herontwikkeling, herbestemming, transformatie en restauratie van bestaande bebouwing een belangrijke rol speelt .
De architectonische taal wordt gekenmerkt door een rationele benadering van de bouwopgave. Deze valt samen met beeldende, op de herinneringen van de toeschouwers inspelende, vormen, materialen en kleuren, en wordt in het ontwerpproces in tekening gebracht en verder uitgewerkt.
Vooral de interpretatie van het “verlangen” van de opdrachtgever vormt, naast situatieve eigenschappen, programmatische eisen, specifieke eigenschappen, kenmerken en waarden van eventueel te handhaven bestaande bebouwing, de aanleiding tot een speurtocht naar een sterk architectonisch concept, dat de betreffen
