A sa création (2003), SMARTWEAR s'est intéressé aux nouvelles technologies du monde de l’interface entre l’homme et son milieu ambiant (texile intelligent). SMARTWEAR a collaboré à divers programmes de recherche créant le lien entre le monde de la recherche et le secteur textile, notamment dans la maîtrise des besoins d'intégration de senseurs au sein des textiles
En 2008, SMARTWEAR a recentrer ses activités sur un axe technologique plus ciblé sur la notion de capteur sans fils et de réseaux de rapatriement de données. Une première augmentation de capital lui a permis de continuer ses efforts de recherche et développement en collaboration avec MULTITEL.
Aujourd'hui (2010), SMARTWEAR se présente comme un fournisseur de solution dans les domaines de l'intégration RFID (Radio Fréqiuence IDentification) et du positionnement et plus particulièrement en terme de système de positionnement local (LPS) pour milieu confiné.
An sa qualité de spin-off du centre de recherche Multitel, SMARTWEAR est resté proche
