Stichting Granate is in november 2012 opgericht op initiatief van Nafiss Nia, dichter en filmmaker. Granate heeft als doel het creëren van kansen voor getalenteerde kunstenaars, met name met een niet Nederlandse achtergrond, en het bevorderen van meer culturele diversiteit in de Nederlandse film en literatuur. De naam Granate verwijst naar de Granaatappel, een prachtige vrucht vol van onzichtbare pitten, die met de juiste zorg en aandacht kunnen uitgroeien tot een bloeiende boom. De granaatappel staat symbool voor diversiteit en eenheid van het leven.
