Substation33 is a social venture arm of YFS that supports the mainstream work performed by the organization by providing a training and employment stream for some of our young clients and others from the greater Logan area. Substation33 opened its doors in January 2013 as an electronic waste recycling centre that offers people the opportunity to volunteer in a safe supported work environment.
As well as providing people the chance to gain work experience, confidence and skills, the enterprise has environmental benefit. In a little over 18 months of operation Substation33 has collected over 250,000 kilograms of obsolete, unwanted computers and electronics equipment that were destined for landfill. This eWaste is disassembled and on-sold back into the commodity stream relieving the pressure on natural resources.
