En 1971 siguiendo el ejemplo de la Cinemateca Francesa, se fundó en Bogotá la Cinemateca Distrital: un archivo fílmico, una biblioteca especializada y una sala de cine que fue la primera de su tipo en Colombia. Desde ese entonces, la Cinemateca Distrital, ahora principal escenario de la Gerencia de Artes Audiovisuales, es un observatorio de cultura audiovisual gracias a sus investigaciones y publicaciones.
Es un centro de formación para los realizadores colombianos y un espacio que ofrece a los colombianos todo el cine del mundo: desde las grandes obras del patrimonio audiovisual de la humanidad, pasando por lo más reciente de la producción global e incluyendo también los audiovisuales experimentales, comunitarios y alternativos que se producen tanto en los barrios populares de Bogotá, Colombia como en las calles de todos los continentes.
