Los inicios de la Universidad Nororiental Privada Gran Mariscal de Ayacucho se remontan al año 1985, cuando el Dr. Eduardo González Reyes, acompañado de otros visionarios, impulsó su creación, esfuerzo que se vio materializado mediante Decreto Presidencial No. 1.511 publicado en la Gaceta Oficial No. 33.692 del 03 de abril de 1987 que autorizó su funcionamiento con el nombre de Universidad Nororiental (UNOR), teniendo como sede principal la ciudad de Barcelona, Estado Anzoátegui, Venezuela. La adopción del nombre “Universidad Nororiental Privada Gran Mariscal de Ayacucho”, incluyendo el acrónimo UGMA, se concretó en 1993 con la incorporación de la Sociedad Civil Promotora de la Universidad, presidida por el Dr. Arístides Maza Tirado, quien con el resto de integrantes, añadió el esfuerzo necesario en materia de gerencia y motivación, que permitió alcanzar el grado de desarrollo que hoy presenta.
