Japanese-born Miho Aoki and Vietnamese-born Thuy Pham founded United Bamboo in New York 1998 and has since expanded the brand into a cultural project. United Bamboo has established itself as a pioneer in fashion design and creative collaboration with downtown artists, curators and musicians.
United Bamboo has been connected to some of New York’s major downtown musicians from the appearance of Chan Marshall in an early ad campaign to running its own music label, UUAR, which put out the seminal compilation “They Keep Me Smiling” curated by Black Dice drummer & artist Hisham Baroocha. A collectors hardcover book/CD that included music and artwork by Animal Collective, Gang Gang Dance, Black Dice & others. Mucisians who have been commissioned to make fashion show music and/or performed include: Karen O (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), Panda Bear, Sean Lennon, James Iha (Smashing Pumpkins), Pete Kember (Spaceman 3), and Cibo Matto.
Artist collaborations have included Terence Koh modeling for United Bamboo’s menswear
