Op 11 maart 1909 besloot een vereniging van ouders om in Groningen een christelijk gymnasium te openen in september van dat jaar. Gereformeerden en hervormden hadden elkaar gevonden in een toen opmerkelijke overeenkomst die de stichting van een gezamenlijke school mogelijk maakte. De bereidheid om over en weer open te staan voor een andere gezindte zou een blijvend kenmerk worden van de nieuwe school, die met de tijd mee groeide in een steeds breder spectrum van levensbeschouwelijke overtuigingen rond de kern van christelijke waarden en tradities.
