The original Fonnafly AS was founded on 6 November 1970, in Rosendal, Kvinnherad, Hardanger, as a seaplane operator.​ At one stage, Fonnafly was one of Norway's biggest charter/taxi air operators, operating both seaplanes and twin engine landplanes. In February 1990, the seaplane operation was parted out and renamed Fonnafly Sjø AS. The company was a pure seaplane operator until 2004, when the first helicopter was introduced. The company was again renamed, this time back to Fonnafly AS. April 1, 2004 was a new milestone in Fonnafly's history. For the first time Fonnafly became a licensed helicopter operator. Two Robinson R44 helicopters were acquired and were operated from bases at Bergen Airport Flesland (ENBR) and in central Bergen. A partner to Fonnafly AS, Voss Helikopter AS was founded 20 October 2006 by Jon Ove Velure and Lars Løne. Owned 50% by Løne Holding and 50% by Hardanger Chips AS, Voss Helikopter operate a single Eurocopter from Bømoen in Voss. Another milstone was reached in March
