元智大學原名元智工學院，位於臺灣桃園市中壢區。
元智創立於1989年，創辦人為遠東集團徐有庠先生，現任董事長為徐旭東先生。雖校址位於中壢區，但校地大部分位於八德區境內。其校園建築多以清水建築工法興建，各有特色。
做為全臺第一所獲得「國家品質獎」的大學，2011年元智於獲得英國《泰晤士報高等教育專刊》評為臺灣8所全球前400名的大學。2013年元智於獲得英國《泰晤士報高等教育專刊》評為臺灣17所亞洲前100名的大學。2015年，西班牙網路中心評其為全球第775名。
「元智」這個圖騰說明著緣起一切，猶如花木之逢春葳蕤，川流之起始源泉，羔羊之跪乳反哺。元智的成立，是一個感恩的故事，感恩於父母、社會、以及國家，於企業卓然有成之時，完成一個回饋的心願。
元智大學乃是遠東關係企業創辦人徐有庠先生為追懷親恩及秉承「己欲立而立人、己欲達而達人」之庭訓，遂於歷經五十寒暑創業有成之後，懷抱「回饋社會、為國育才」的心念，同時還報「有庠」命名，蘊含一段「教育」的因緣。
元智的命名，乃以創辦人先君「元智」公名諱為名；同時「元」乃易經乾卦四德之首，「智」乃古代君子四端之末，以「元智」二字為校名，象徵與實質意義十分遠大。
